Mesquite PD Holds Inaugural Summer Camp
The Mesquite Police Department debuted a summer camp this year to provide Mesquite ISD elementary students the opportunity to interact with and learn from police officers.
“We launched this new program for elementary-age students because adolescents benefit from the interaction with police officers,” Mesquite police Sgt. Frank Pontillo said. “The free camp included entertaining activities that also taught the students self-confidence and trust.”
The police department used its donation fund to pay for the $1,100 camp. The camp included team-building exercises, trips to recreation centers, a movie day at a local theater, a behind-the-scenes tour of the police station and learning anti-bullying skills.
Mesquite PD provided lunch, snacks and special amenities during the free camp.
Mesquite PD’s LETS (Law Enforcement Teaching Students) officers chose 18 campers from various elementary schools for the camp.
Pontillo said middle school resource officers were at the camp so campers could meet police officers they would see at their future school. A handful of campers also had the opportunity to lead the Pledge of Allegiance during a Mesquite City Council meeting Monday.
