Hallie’s Heroes

Join the Mesquite Police Association on October 12th, 2018 from 12:30 to 3:30 at the Mesquite City Hall Training Rooms A and B, located at 777 North Galloway Avenue to donate to this great cause.

HallieHallie Bea Barnard of Denton, Texas is a sweet, active 10 year old looking for a bone marrow match. At 13 months old, Hallie was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disorder, Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA). The only “cure” for DBA is a bone marrow transplant. Hallie’s bone marrow doesn’t produce red blood cells. Hallie is currently taking steroids to survive, but once she becomes steroid resistant, she will need blood transfusions every 3 weeks.

It is truly like winning the lottery when a match is found. Less than 2% of Americans are on the bone marrow registry, and those who are, have a 1% chance of being a match to anyone worldwide.

Hallie’s Heroes was born in July of 2015. Using Hallie’s strength and courage as our example, we decided to not just try to find Hallie’s match, but also the 14,000 other people who are desperately waiting to find their bone marrow matches. On-Going Success Story. We have registered 7,000 people in the National Bone Marrow Registry and have found 69 matches. Of those matches, so far 10 lives have been saved!

If you are that 1% chance to be someone’s Hero, the following are ways to donate:

Peripheral Blood Stem Cell – 6-8 hour non-surgical procedure. Blood is drawn from one arm, passed through a machine that filters out the stem cells and returned through the other arm. Prior to donation, the donor will receive injection to stimulate stem cell production.

Bone Marrow – 1-2 hours surgical procedure where marrow is taken from the pelvic bone.
