Taking the Plunge

This year’s Mesquite Polar Plunge event to raise money for the Special Olympics of Texas brought out a large crowd. The event took place at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the City Lake Aquatic Center, with special guests Kat, Emma and Cheyenne of the Dallas Stars Ice Girls.

Many of Mesquite’s Police officers, including Police Chief Charles Cato, took the plunge, as well as members of local church groups and some of Team Mesquite’s Special Olympics team members.

Kristie Crone, development director for Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) said there were about 75 plungers and they raised, as of Monday morning, $19,890, but expects more money to come in later.

“We do expect it to hit over $20,000. That’s an increase of 35 percent over what we did last year,” she said.

Crone said they had about the same number of plungers as last year but bigger sponsors.

This year’s best costume was a clown. Other costumes that morning was Raggedy and Batgirl.

“As always, it was a really good turnout,” she said.
